OVER 9.65 LAKH SIGN UP FOR JEE-1 DESPITE DATE CLASH WITH CLASS XII PRACTICAL TESTS

Despite the date clash with class 12 practical examination, over 9.65 lakh engineering aspirants have reportedly registered themselves for the January JEE Main-1. The class 12 practical examination is also scheduled to take place in the month of January (6th to 20th). This number for the January 2019 cycle is 2.5 lakh less than that for JEE Main of April 2018, said a report in The Times of India. The candidates must note that the NTA will conduct the JEE Main for the second time in the month of April.

“The numbers are much higher than anticipated. The National Talent Agency (NTA) was expecting around 6 lakh registrations for JEE-Main 1,” a senior official told TOI. The official added, “Because of the preparation for board exams and since the second JEE will be held just three months later, we expected a smaller number. However, the registrations are close to those of previous exams. The numbers (for JEE-Main) are likely to increase in April as majority of those who take the test in January would look to improve their scores. Plus, there will be those that didn’t register in the round one.”

Engineering continues to be dominated by men, as is evident from a low 29% applications from female candidates, say MHRD sources. The report further adds that the number of SC aspirants is 9%, and that of ST aspirants is 3.7%. There are also 38 transgender aspirants.

The candidates who are appearing for the examination must note that this is for the first time that these examinations will be conducted by the National Testing Agency or the NTA. This time, the examination will be computer based.

According to the NTA, this year the examinations will be conducted across 276 cities in India. The NTA runs 3,777 test practice centres of which 1,049 have started functioning from September this year.

To help the students who are preparing for the examination, the NTA will make more test papers available for those seeking a practice session.

BEST JEE (MAINS & ADVANCED ) BOOKS FOR PHYSICS ,CHEMISTRY AND MATHEMATICS

Confused about which books to read for your JEE preparation? Well, lakhs of students who start preparing for JEE feel the same kind of dilemma.Having cleared IIT JEE Advanced, MATRIX will share with you the books with most of Matrix students who cracked JEE used and specify the details of them, and also the reasons as to why you should or should not follow some of the books.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE PHYSICS :

Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma – It is one the best book for physics JEE preparation. All the topics required for JEE is covered extensively. The chapters are very concise and there is no useless text. There are many solved and unsolved questions which every student must solve. There are different types of questions like short answers, multiple choice and subjective which help students to get ready for each of the types.  This book will test your concepts  and you will get to understand the logic in a very clear way. Though this book in itself is not sufficient as the number of questions are quite less for JEE standards, but this book is a must!.

Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick & Walker  This book contains a lot of theory with sufficient number of real life examples, which will help you understand the topic in a very detailed manner. I would recommend it to you only if you do not understand any topic of H C Verma, because the chapters have much more explanation than is required for JEE Main and Advanced. The questions present at the end of the chapters are good and mostly inspired by some real life example, so it will be interesting to solve those questions.

IIT JEE Physics by DC Pandey –  This book is really good for practicing questions, but not the theory part. Though the initial edition of the book had many mistakes, it is improving year after year. So you should buy the new version of this book. There are plenty of problems which are both challenging and specific to the syllabus of competitive exams. There are many students who follow this book and have improved a lot. If you are in some good coaching then you need not do this book as you will get similar type of problems in your coaching sheets. But if you are not in any coaching, this book is best for you!

NCERT Text books – The basics for most problems in JEE Mains are from NCERT textbook for Physics and all you require is to alter the arguements as required in the problem. This ofcourse requires deep understanding of the concepts, which few students find difficult to learn from NCERT textbooks, hence requiring other books. But there have been few questions in the past which can be answered only by reading between the lines of NCERT chapters. While questions from most of the chapters lie within limits of NCERT, there are chapters like Optics, Rotational Dynamics, Oscillations, Waves which require a broader knowledge of the topics. For Modern Physics and Mechanics, the concepts in NCERT books seem just sufficient. It’s noteworthy here that you should definitely check out the ‘Points to Ponder’ section at the end of each chapter. Because questions from that section were served in past years’ JEE papers.

Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov – This book has many tough and drilling problems, even way beyond IIT JEE level. So, I will never recommend this to anyone, at least not for JEE preparation. If you are very interested in Physics and love solving very challenging problems yourself, only then you can opt for this book. There are many teachers who will recommend this book to you, but they only do so to make it sound and look “difficult”.

In Physics, concept and practice both are very important. If you practice a lot without building on your concepts, then you reach nowhere. You will see a few students do very good even without practicing a lot in Physics, this is only because they know the concept very well and can apply them efficiently.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY :

Concepts of Organic Chemistry OP Tandon – This book is one of the best book for JEE’s Organic Chemistry. The theory and reactions are well mentioned and are simplified so that you can understand and learn them nicely. The chapters are well divided and structured. It includes multiple choice, matching-type, assertion reason-type and subjective questions for you to practice and are of JEE level.

NCERT Text Books  – NCERT is good but not self sufficient. You need to study some other books if you are doing NCERT, as it does not contain all the required variations in problems and reactions which are required to understand and crack JEE.

In Organic Chemistry, the most important thing is practice. If you only know the concepts, it will not help you. So, which ever book you do, make sure you practice a lot. The questions will not take much time to solve like in Physical Chemistry or Physics etc, but you need to do at least 10x more questions of this subject than that of Physical Chemistry.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE INORGANIC CHEMISTRY :

NCERT Text books – For Inorganic Chemistry, this book is more than self sufficient. This is the Bible for Inorganic Chemistry. As there are concepts in every chapter, but in inorganic chemistry there are many concepts and exceptions, so you will lastly have to remember the concepts by heart, so that you do not forget or confuse during JEE Mains or Advanced. It is the truth, you will have to learn many things, so it’s important to read only the things that are in the JEE syllabus. Most of the other books for Inorganic have much more content than required, so if you follow those you will end up learning many useless things. Its good to learn by practice in Inorganic. I would like to strongly recommend you this book, you must study and solve this!

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY :

Physical Chemistry by O.P. Tandon – Same as Organic Chemistry, O P Tandon for Physical is of the finest books. The author has covered all the topics in the best way so that you can understand and apply it to solve the problems. There are many types of problems at the end of each chapter which go level by level, helping to grasp each topic nicely. Physical Chemistry is also conceptual, so its important that you understand it nicely.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE MATHEMATICS :

Maths By R.D. Sharma – This is one of the best book for JEE to make the basics clear for Mathematics. It contains theory for each chapter which is self explanatory and the there are many solved/unsolved problems which will build your foundation for entrance exams. I will not say that it is self sufficient for JEE Advanced though, because there aren’t as many tough problems as is  required for JEE Advanced preparation. So, for JEE Advanced at least, you have to consult other books or coaching institutions sheets.

Calculus By Amit Agarwal – For calculus this book is ideal. It contains problems which will start from the basic level and go upto the highest level. There are many techniques described to quickly solve the problems which is most important for Jee. You can do it after you have done R.D. Sharma.

Algebra by S.K.Goyal – This book is one of the good for JEE preparation. There are sufficient tough questions to practice. So, again you need to do R.D. Sharma first and then this book.

NCERT Text books of Mathematics- Mathematics is regarded as the hardest section to crack in JEE Main and make it a point that you do ample practice to be able to answer as many questions as possible.NCERT books for good scores in Mathematics. Again, it is compulsory to go through problems in NCERT Mathematics because there have been instances when a problem has directly been asked from there. You wouldn’t want to miss that chance.

So, these are the few books Matrix would recommend you. There will be many people who will suggest you many books, but its important for you to first choose which will be best for you and then start it, because most of the students start one book and then shift to another in the middle, and then another. This lastly creates a chaos and the student becomes puzzled. So, choose wisely.

The registration for the same began on 1st September and will continue till the 30th of September 2018 (last date for fee payment is 1st October 2018). JEE Mains-I will be conducted between 6th to 20th January 2019 across the country.

Paper 1 will be a computer based test which will have questions from Physics, Chemistry and Maths and will be held in 2 shifts of 3 hours each i.e. 09:30 am to 12:30pm and 02:30 pm to 05:30pm.

On the other hand, Paper 2 will be held in one sitting only and will consist of 3 parts namely – Part1-Mathematics, Part 2- Aptitude Test and Part 3 – Drawing Test. Parts 1 and 2 will be computer based while Part 3 will be a pen and paper based offline test.

Paper 1 will comprise of 30 Questions each from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Every correct answer will get you 4 marks but for every wrong answer 1 mark will be deducted. The exam will have a total of 120 questions with a total of 360 marks.

Here are a few tips on how to go about your preparation for the January exam along with your regular studies for Boards:

1. First and foremost, go through the syllabus.

Go through the vast syllabus and try to analyze and segregate the topics into 3 categories i.e. topics you know, topics you don’t know and the difficult topics.
Also, there are a lot of topics that are overlapping between class 12th and the JEE exam, identifying them and studying them will help you, both for the JEE exam as well as for the boards. It is also important that you study simultaneously a concept that you know along with the one you don’t or a difficult one to wind up with your syllabus within appropriate timelines.

2. Make a study schedule

Time table or a schedule with small daily, weekly and monthly targets which are realistic will go a long way in not only getting you into a routine but will also help you in ascertaining the time you require to complete your preparation and whether you’re lagging behind overall or are on the right track.

3. Previous Year Papers

Do not ignore or skip this part as it is the most crucial in understanding the pattern and type of questions being asked in the exam, the level of difficulty, how much you already know in each subject and how much more effort you need to put in. Time and again, JEE Toppers have cited the value of previous year papers.

4. Mock Tests

The adage ‘Practice makes a man perfect’ holds true even today. Once you have completed the entire syllabus go for full length mock tests to assess how well you’re prepared. In addition focus on time management during these mock tests. After giving mock tests don’t leave it at that rather analyze the questions you couldn’t attempt and the questions where you erred so as to identify your weak areas.

5. Your health

Health here includes both the physical and mental aspect. Eat healthy, exercise daily, keep yourself hydrated and take timeout once in a while for the fun activities that you love doing. Further, meditate and don’t overstress yourself. Keep yourself motivated and don’t lose hope. Trust yourself and trust that you can do it!

6. Revision Strategy

Once you’re done with the preparation, focus on revision as it helps in consolidation of all the knowledge and information you’ve studies so far. Given below is a subject wise revision strategy that might help you –
Firstly, start by revising the most important topics for the JEE mains exam.
Once that’s done, focus and revise topics that are your weak areas and concepts that you identified from mock tests or any other form of self analysis. Study the concepts that you’re not good at again and solve questions based on them.

Once you’re done with the revision of the weak concepts, start with the revision of the whole syllabus of the 3 subjects wherein automatically you’ll again revise both the most important topics as well as your weak areas.

To revise Physics effectively and efficiently –

Study every topic from your notes quickly and solve questions covering the areas you’ve studied. In case a concept is not clear ask your teacher or watch videos on the internet and then solve questions again to test your understanding. Learn the formulae, equations and their derivation as well. Practice questions, especially during revision go for questions that have a higher difficulty level.

To revise Chemistry efficiently, ensure that the concepts of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry are clear to you. In addition, practice and learn by heart the various formulae, equations and reactions. Lay special emphasis on organic chemistry due to the vast number of reactions in that section. Solve as many questions as you can with a higher difficulty level.

For revision of Mathematics, make sure you comprehend and retain the various formulae under each topic. Solve questions and problems on every topic.

Lastly, don’t be tough on yourself. Give it your best shot and in case you don’t get through don’t feel disheartened as the exam will be held once again before the 2019 academic session starts!
Good luck!
