How to manage time during JEE preparation?

All the JEE Aspirants face a challenge during their preparation and that’s time. Continuing with their daily schedule it really becomes difficult for the aspirants to take out quality time to prepare for the Joint Entrance. Students, as a result tend to exert themselves and often lose track. Keeping on with the spirit and staying focus is the key to success. The possible way to achieve this is to prepare a compact and healthy routine. So, all the students must start their preparation by building a good routine.

There are 6-time management tips which a student need to follow to achieve his goal.

  • Organise
  • Track
  • Prioritize
  • Schedule
  • Review
  • Follow

There lies so many questions in the mind of a student who prepares for JEE – “How much time should I devote for JEE preparation?” “What is an ideal routine that needs to be followed?” “Should I take break?”  and many more. In addition to this, students start measuring time while preparing for JEE. Measuring preparation in terms of numbers is a wrong strategy. A student devoting 12 hours of his time in preparing for JEE can score less than a student preparing for 6-hour time. So, the number really doesn’t matter, it’s the quality which matters the most in a synchronized way.

A balanced routine with a constant good focus can create wonders. Amount of time and duration or the phase of the day doesn’t matter. One can be more flexible studying during the day whereas one can study at night. But, one must make sure that he sleeps for at least 6 hours. The sleeping time has to be included in the routine for the preparation.

A student preparing for JEE first needs to build a quality routine which includes all the activities, i.e.  studying, refreshment & sleeping. He must set up his educational routine in such a way that it includes every subject within a short span. The difficulty level should also be taken into consideration. One should not jump directly into solving hard questions which leads to breakdown of self- confidence. The difficulty level should be increased gradually from low to medium to high. It can become monotonous for a student to study constantly. There lies the advantage or the usefulness of the break time. A student can adjust his time in such a way that when he feels exhausted he can take a break for breakfast, lunch or even for other refreshments.

A student must not indulge himself only to book study;he must also go through various study materials. At Matrix Academy, we provide quality material to the students which help them during their preparation. We provide the students comprehensive study material which contains Daily practice problems, Chapter wise Exercise sheets, Theory notes and key concepts and Question Bank. All these enhances the students’ knowledge to a great extent. Moreover, it helps in building a proper knowledge of the upcoming examination with a good grasp of some tough questions.

It might happen that the student misunderstands that refreshment is referred to as playing video games or watching television. This is absolutely not the case. One should not waste time watching television or playing games because this causes a distraction and as a result one cannot concentrate.

A good routine is that where one studies for 2 to 2.5 hours at a stretch and takes a break for 15mins. The students are given complete freedom to build the routine of their choice which will provide them the best results. This is done under the guidance of our renowned faculty.

We wish all the students good luck.

JEE Advanced to contain short answer type questions

The announcement comes just a day after the JAB said the next IIT-JEE (Advanced) will be conducted online. JEE (Advanced) so far only had MCQs, where the correct answer had to be marked into optical mark reading sheets later evaluated by machines.

“The introduction of a computer-based test will give candidates access to keyboards. So, they will be able to provide correct answers through calculations, if necessary,” said a JAB source. “When the question pattern was multiple-choice, examinees often took refuge in the process of elimination to guess the answer. Now, such opportunities will be limited,” he added.

Since there is no order about framing questions in a particular way, question-setters will be at liberty to introduce a variety of questions that challenge examinees to think harder, and not just rely on techniques or memorization to crack the questions. “Concept-based questions will increase. The question pattern is set to change,” the official explained.

The decision to shift to a computerized testing system had been taken to eliminate printing errors and translation goof-ups that create.

We at Matrix predict that examination would have both MCQ type questions while it may also have short answer type questions. For the short answer type questions, answers would most likely be either ONE WORD ANSWER or in the form of numbers. This is because if the JAB wants to go with subjective questions like board examination, it would be very tough for the JAB to get more than 200,000+ students’ responses checked in a short span.

JOINT ENTRANCE EXAMINATION TO GO ONLINE

Joint Entrance Examination which is the doorway to many significant and prestigious institutes like IITs, NITs, will be conducted online from next year. The decision is taken by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) to evaluate the result in a more logistic and easier way.

The joint admission board (JAB), also announced that it will do away with multiple choice questions (MCQ) and instead opt for short answer type questions.

The whole process of getting admission however remains the same i.e. the students need to get through the JEE Main to appear for the JEE Advance. The government decided to introduce the online exam for the JEE Main, but JAB decided to outspread it to JEE Advance.

Every year approximately 13 Lakhs students appear for the JEE Mains where just 10% of them appear online. But now everyone has to appear at the online system. According to the source, the concept of this online system was prevailing for many years but the implementation took some time, as said by a JAB Member. In addition to this, a JAB Member also stated that this move will create a transparency and avoid leaking of paper too.

The government and the JAB team is working hard to make this event a success. So, they have decided to conduct a training facility for the students before the exam where they will be given a hand on experience over the computer and will also be allowed to give mock tests and assessment to get used to the system. Moreover, the schools will also be instructed to allow students to practice on computers to get a good grip before the examination.

The online system however has various benefits within itself. As mentioned earlier it will create a transparency and avoid leaking of papers. In addition to it, preparing question papers online can help judge the difficulty level from low to medium to high. The online exam will even neutralize the problem of misprinting, which is greatly faced by the students appearing for the offline mode of examination.

A recent incident in 2017 examination where some questions being incorrect was raised by some students. To meet the students’ query the council decided to grant 18 marks bonus to all the students whether they have applied for it or not. So, to cope up from all these unwanted circumstances the council have finally decided to bring in the online system.

All the students need to cooperate with the government and the board because all these are done to create a fair environment for the students. The students need to stay focused on their work and concentrate in their study. The mode of examination should not bother the student. These are part and parcel. Moreover, all the necessary steps will be followed by the government, council and the schools to help the student achieve their goal and to get through this new system smoothly. The students just need to cooperate with them all and give their best to get the best results.

At Matrix JEE Academy, we will take care of the students, their problems and difficulties. The students will be provided with proper guidance and they will secure a good grip over the new system. Various new techniques and methodology will be introduced for the betterment of the students.

Exams in online mode

In the past few years there have been some significant changes not only in the paper pattern of the various competitive exams such as JEE Advanced but also the mode in which the examinations are conducted. A decade earlier, online examination was not as mainstream as it is now. This has been the result of rapid information technology boost in the past few years in our country. Surprisingly, the student community was the first to acclimatize to this change. This made the online examination more preferable than the offline version for many students.

We believe that online examination definitely has an edge when compared with its offline version. A lot of overheads are reduced not only for the students but also for the conducting authority. Paper correction becomes easy and there is absolutely no chance of errors to creep in. The candidate can evaluate or re-answer any question at any point of time during the examination. The candidate can change the answers during the exam duration which to my mind is the most striking feature of online process. The candidate also has an option to mark any answer for review at a later stage during the examination. A panel on the screen shows all the question numbers in different color scheme which indicates the questions that are answered, left unanswered and marked for review. The only pitfall is that many students from rural background are not accustomed to stare a computer screen for 3 hours straight. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to keep certain things in mind before attempting the exam in online mode.

It’s better to come prepared in every aspect for the examination for which you have prepared so rigorously for the past 1-2 years. Few points that you might want to keep track off-

1. First of all, train yourselves to take the exam on a computer and the best practice is take many demo exams through online mode before the actual examination.
2. Rough sheets are provided separately, so you don’t need to worry about rough space.
3. Try to reach examination center at least 30 minutes before the examination. This is because in some cases the computers can turn out to be faulty.
4. There are buffer computers and IT professionals at the center to deal with such emergencies. Take there help if necessary.
5. Keep track of time while solving the paper.
6. The paper will automatically be submitted and you won’t be able to mark the answers once the time is over. However, you will be given many warnings when the time is about to get over so this is hardly a worry factor.

Now let’s get to some of the myths related to the online examination mode. The most common one being that you need a thorough knowledge of computers to attempt them. Literally speaking, all you need to know is how to use a mouse on a computer to take the examination. The exams are designed in a way that requires minimal computer knowledge. Another myth is that this examination is not secure. The online JEE examination is one of the most secure examinations conducted in our country. So rest assured, no one will be able to access your answers except you. The paper also allows you to see the answers in Hindi. This allows you to have a further level of clarification. Yet another myth is that candidates don’t get question paper for future reference unlike the offline mode. The question paper along with the options marked is mailed to each and every candidate after the exam schedule is over.

Online exam is extremely easy and helpful if you understand all the rules properly and abide by all the instructions. You will face no problems on the technical side during the examination. If you have some other doubts you can always visit the JEE website and clarify them. There is also a call center support facility available for the appearing candidates.

Preparing for JEE – beginners guide

Teachers and institute: Needless to say, studying at a place where teachers are good is very important. But more than the teachers, academic system and processes are more important. Generally its seen that a balanced institute with good teachers and disciplined academic system produces better result than an institute with hyped and famous teachers but with no clear cut strategy and academic system . What is a good coaching institute depends on the city where you are living. Get the material, and also pay full attention in class. Do not go to tech-savvy places where they just give you a tablet and ask you to view the lectures… I had old-fashioned JEE profs who used to make learning fun, and they used the blackboard/whiteboard.

Coming to the timetable part. Since there are so many topics to study, there is no point in me detailing a topic-wise timetable. Instead I will give you a few points to keep in mind while making a timetable.

Planning: The key point about preparing for IITJEE is planning. You must have a clear idea of what you are going to do tomorrow and also have a broad idea of what topics you are going to cover in the next 3-4 days, or maybe even a week. By clear idea, I mean, for example, you must be absolutely sure which sections of which chapter you are going to read up, which problems from which Sheet/DPP you are going to try out, and how many of them you aim to complete as well. Further, clear idea means you must know at what time of the day you are going to do which of the tasks planned on that day. You should spend some 15-20 mins before you sleep everyday, outlining the tasks for the next day and the time slot for each task. Having regular study hours is very useful in this context. By broad idea, I mean you must know that in the next 3-4 days, you must finish chapters XXX in subject YYY and their corresponding problems from DPP/ Sheet no. ZZZ. Also, at the end of each day, review mentally what were the things that you did, and what are the pending items.

Theory: It is best to start a chapter/unit by studying the theory. Do not start with problems and think that you will learn the theory as the problem demands. Finish the theory off thoroughly. For example, I would take circles and parabolas as one segment of Conic sections and finish learning thoroughly all the formulae/concepts involved. Only then would I start attempting problems from circles and parabolas. You must be able to tell all the concepts/formulae from memory before you start attempting any problems.

Problem-solving: Please, please start with easy problems. Do not straightaway try to master the hard problems, it will not work. Firstly, doing the easy problems will help you verify that your concepts are correct, and you are using them correctly. Secondly, it will set your brain along the correct path of thinking required for that chapter/unit. Thirdly, and crucially, it will build your confidence. Doing hard problems first, and not getting them right will shatter your confidence. Then gradually raise the level, go to medium , and then to hard. In many JEE materials, if the problems are not already classified, then the first few problems are easy, and the last few ones are hard, with the difficulty level gradually increasing. If you do not get a problem , please spend as long as possible to get the solution by yourself. Do not immediately refer to the solution manual. This way, you will subconsciously internalize many ideas that would not have come to you if you gave up on the problem after just one/two attempts.

Time spent on studying: You don’t really have to slog 12 hrs after school and coaching classes on weekdays. You’ll die. Study maybe 6-8 hrs depending on how much time you have… but study effectively. No point sitting for long hours if your concentration levels are low throughout. Stay away from noise, crowd, people while studying. Some people (like me) require absolute silence while studying, while some may require some pleasant music. Find out what works for you. On Sundays, try spending 8-10 hrs and maybe a bit more if you don’t have any classes/tests etc.

Failure doesn’t define you, success does

This is the time in the year when all the students are geared up for your exams be it JEE MAINS or your 12th BOARDS. This is also the time of the year when the pressure on the students is on its peak. And sad to say but this is also the part of year when most of the students face mental as well as nervous breakdown. This blog will mainly focus on the ill effects of the huge amount of pressure that the education system puts of the students.
Let me illustrate my point. Kota or “the city of coaching classes” as it is called leads in the number of suicides that the students commit. Every year around this time a lot of students take this extreme step and in all cases the reason is same….they could not perform to the expectations of society.
The point that I am trying to make is that these exams don’t define who you are. Qualifying these exams is not at all a parameter to success. Failing them will not guarantee that you are unsuccessful and clearing them does not mean that you are successful. I have numerous examples in which students who were not able to clear JEE reached the pinnacle of success and also those who failed even after getting admission in IIT.
Failures are just a stepping stones to success. I know how much it hurts to be in a situation in which you think that all the efforts that you have put in these years have been a total waste. But it is not the destination that matters but the journey itself. Success is something which never comes to anyone on their first go. You have to prove yourself that you are truly worthy for that success. Don’t think that you were not able to clear the exams, but rather think what did the life teach you in this entire journey and believe me there is no way a 3 hour paper can truly be a indicator of amount of hard work that you have done. Nobody is perfect in this world. Its ok to fail, everybody fails at some point of time but it is equally important to learn from the mistakes. There might be many reasons why you failed, maybe you were not able to manage time properly or just that you are not able to perform well under pressure.
Listen to me, if life would have been so easy then everyone would have been able to fulfill their dreams.
The wealthiest place on this planet is the graveyard because in a graveyard we will find inventions that were never really worked on, superb ideas that were never really worked on, hopes and aspirations that were never really acted upon. The question is what you are going to do with your time. What drives you? Success does not mean taking a giant step, rather it means taking lots of little steps in the right direction. You will never be successful until you turn your pain into efforts, until you allow your pain to push you from where you are to where you need to be. Just dace your pain, embrace it because it is going to be a part of your product, a part of your prize, a part of yourself.
See it’s time now. Now the decisions that you take will change your life forever. If you want to fulfill your dreams say yes to pain, say yes to suffering, yes to failures and say yes to your potential. When you die, leave no dream left behind guys. Leave no opportunity to accomplish your dreams and at last leave no regrets.
Best of luck

Why IIT is cool not just for its placements?

images (51)

1) Chance to grow more from a mere nerd after joining IIT

The awesome opportunities, die-for networking, sensitization towards social issues, confidence of making a mark in the world, constant broadening of horizons are just a few benefits of being an IITian. It’s not just about book smarts. It’s about real smarts!

********************
2) IITs produce more entrepreneurs than even Ivy Leagues

According to a study by Pitchbook Data, a US based private equity and research based firm, IITs ranked fourth beating all Ivy League institutions such as Princeton, Cornell, Yale. It even beat Harvard, which ranked fifth, in churning out the most number of entrepreneurs. Some of the most popular IITian entrepreneurs are Gagan Goyal (Think Labs), Bipin Preet Singh (MobiKwik), Narayan Murthy (Infosys), Sachin and Binny Bansal (Flipkart).

*******************
3) Creativity

You would be surprised to know that IITians are not just brainy, nerdy and all into science all the time. Many of them are highly artistic and creative and do venture into areas of their passions too. Many have taken the impossible decision of leaving the lucrative engineer career and tread the paths of their calling. And the best part is, they made their mark even in creative field, letting the world know that IITians are capable of any feat. Think Chetan Bhagat. His first novel “Five Point Someone” was inspired by IIT culture. And the next time you’re gorging on Q-tiyapa, think Arunabh Kumar, the co-founder of The Viral Fever who left a lucrative job at United States Air Force to follow his passion and gift India a gem of a web series. And if you were really inspired by the Ranbeer Kapoor starrer blockbuster “Salesman Of The Year”, then you must also remember Amol Pareshar, who made a debut with this film as a supporting actor! So much inspiration floating around in IIT!

*********************
4) Huge variety of companies, bigger chances of exploration.

Companies that come for campus placements at IIT are not restricted to technology alone. All companies from software giants to consulting firms come to IIT to find best minds of India. So you know you can explore various companies for internships as well and don’t have to be restricted just to one field.

**********************
5) You learn the importance of discipline and hard work every second of your life at IIT

Being at IIT, among the best minds from all over India and many parts of the world as well, makes you push out of your comfort zone each moment of your life there. For the first time, you will not only be studying but also innovating, networking, exploring, learning, appreciating, having fun and what not. And donning so many hats at once requires that you are on your toes all the time. No dillying dallying or procrastination any more. Hard work, sincerity and self discipline become your virtues once you reach at a platform like IIT.
