10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR BRAIN POWER

Successful persons come from all walks of life; however they all have one thing in common: where others see obscure barriers, they see challenges to embrace and obstacles to overcome.

By thinking outside the box and ability to let go of the negativity, successful people rise and shine above their limitations. And it all starts with their morning routines. Here’s how ultra-successful people utilize the first hours of the day :

  • Exercise :

It’s no secret that exercise helps us in minimizing stress and staying fit. However, a new study says exercise is good for your brain, too. Regular exercise improves attention, memory and the brain’s ability to absorb new information.

Find the time to exercise regularly to have a long, healthy and productive life. Exercise not only benefits your brain health and cognition, it can also improve your memory, reduce anxiety and stress, and promote better sleep. In the long run, it can even protect your brain against degeneration.

  • Meditate :

Taking a mere 10 to 15 minutes out of your day to meditate could extend your cognitive longevity, helping you reduce your overall stress levels.Studies show that practicing meditation can help you have a far better ability to focus, positive emotions, emotional stability, and engage in mindful behaviour. These traits don’t come simply from the act of daily meditation but from structural changes in the brain caused by meditation over time.

  • Sleep well :

Early mornings and late night studies, pressure and the stresses that come with tough competition, can have undesirable effects on your sleep patterns.Sleep is essential to consolidate memory and learning. If you don’t get enough sleep, you will have less brain in your head. You must get 7-8 hours of sleep each night consistently so that your body rests and restores itself, subsequently increasing your mental and physical energy for the next day.

  • Eat well :

Your brain needs certain nutrients to stay at its peak performance. Get some protein such as eggs and lentils, healthy fats containing omega-3s such as walnuts and fish and complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and vegetables for your brain health.

Perhaps, you are rushing from school to coaching, studying hard for the huge competition and board exams as well, leaving yourself with very little or no time to eat well. You need to focus on getting the right kind of nutrition. Antioxidants and amino acids are particularly important. Vitamin E, nuts, whole grains, avocados, fruits and vegetables are good for the brain.

  • Take frequent brain breaks :

You can encourage your mind to wander and move your body to refresh your brain. Brain breaks could be in every 30 minutes or every hour depending on the difficulty of the topic at your hand. Take a walk outside or do some stretches in your room.

  • Start your day with mind-calming activities :

Your brain requires warm up or some mental preparation for a long day. You can do activities that bring your mind a sense of calm. It can be exercise, deep breathing, listening to music, or just letting your mind wander by doing a crossword puzzle or reading the newspaper.

  • Limit multi tasking :

Multitasking diminishes mental productivity, elevates brain fatigue and increases stress. Block out information that is not important, it will help your brain function effectively. Also, a motivated brain builds faster and more robust neural connections. Identify your passions and learn more about them.

  • Learn something new and play brain games :

Read books, solve puzzles, learn a musical instrument, take up photography or learn a new language – that challenges your brain, stretches your creativity for improved brain power.

You can play brain games like cross word puzzle, word scrabble or chess. You can also take up a hobby that requires you to exercise your brain- for improved brain function.

  • Do routine activities differently :

Like the muscles, the brain needs constant challenges to grow. You can do a variety of activities; such as if you are right handed, try write with your left hand, eat your food with your left hand. It might be messy at first, but it reroutes those existing pathways, improving your brain power. The point is to keep your brain engaged in activities that are exciting and elevating; that’s the way to increase brain power.

  • Socializing :

Research studies state that life with fun and friends can be beneficial to thinking and memory. A healthy relationship, interacting with others is probably the best way to exercise the brain; relationships can stimulate not only our emotions but also the brain. For a healthy brain, you can volunteer, join a social club, or have friends you can count on for support.

BEST JEE (MAINS & ADVANCED ) BOOKS FOR PHYSICS ,CHEMISTRY AND MATHEMATICS

Confused about which books to read for your JEE preparation? Well, lakhs of students who start preparing for JEE feel the same kind of dilemma.Having cleared IIT JEE Advanced, MATRIX will share with you the books with most of Matrix students who cracked JEE used and specify the details of them, and also the reasons as to why you should or should not follow some of the books.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE PHYSICS :

Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma – It is one the best book for physics JEE preparation. All the topics required for JEE is covered extensively. The chapters are very concise and there is no useless text. There are many solved and unsolved questions which every student must solve. There are different types of questions like short answers, multiple choice and subjective which help students to get ready for each of the types.  This book will test your concepts  and you will get to understand the logic in a very clear way. Though this book in itself is not sufficient as the number of questions are quite less for JEE standards, but this book is a must!.

Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick & Walker  This book contains a lot of theory with sufficient number of real life examples, which will help you understand the topic in a very detailed manner. I would recommend it to you only if you do not understand any topic of H C Verma, because the chapters have much more explanation than is required for JEE Main and Advanced. The questions present at the end of the chapters are good and mostly inspired by some real life example, so it will be interesting to solve those questions.

IIT JEE Physics by DC Pandey –  This book is really good for practicing questions, but not the theory part. Though the initial edition of the book had many mistakes, it is improving year after year. So you should buy the new version of this book. There are plenty of problems which are both challenging and specific to the syllabus of competitive exams. There are many students who follow this book and have improved a lot. If you are in some good coaching then you need not do this book as you will get similar type of problems in your coaching sheets. But if you are not in any coaching, this book is best for you!

NCERT Text books – The basics for most problems in JEE Mains are from NCERT textbook for Physics and all you require is to alter the arguements as required in the problem. This ofcourse requires deep understanding of the concepts, which few students find difficult to learn from NCERT textbooks, hence requiring other books. But there have been few questions in the past which can be answered only by reading between the lines of NCERT chapters. While questions from most of the chapters lie within limits of NCERT, there are chapters like Optics, Rotational Dynamics, Oscillations, Waves which require a broader knowledge of the topics. For Modern Physics and Mechanics, the concepts in NCERT books seem just sufficient. It’s noteworthy here that you should definitely check out the ‘Points to Ponder’ section at the end of each chapter. Because questions from that section were served in past years’ JEE papers.

Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov – This book has many tough and drilling problems, even way beyond IIT JEE level. So, I will never recommend this to anyone, at least not for JEE preparation. If you are very interested in Physics and love solving very challenging problems yourself, only then you can opt for this book. There are many teachers who will recommend this book to you, but they only do so to make it sound and look “difficult”.

In Physics, concept and practice both are very important. If you practice a lot without building on your concepts, then you reach nowhere. You will see a few students do very good even without practicing a lot in Physics, this is only because they know the concept very well and can apply them efficiently.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY :

Concepts of Organic Chemistry OP Tandon – This book is one of the best book for JEE’s Organic Chemistry. The theory and reactions are well mentioned and are simplified so that you can understand and learn them nicely. The chapters are well divided and structured. It includes multiple choice, matching-type, assertion reason-type and subjective questions for you to practice and are of JEE level.

NCERT Text Books  – NCERT is good but not self sufficient. You need to study some other books if you are doing NCERT, as it does not contain all the required variations in problems and reactions which are required to understand and crack JEE.

In Organic Chemistry, the most important thing is practice. If you only know the concepts, it will not help you. So, which ever book you do, make sure you practice a lot. The questions will not take much time to solve like in Physical Chemistry or Physics etc, but you need to do at least 10x more questions of this subject than that of Physical Chemistry.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE INORGANIC CHEMISTRY :

NCERT Text books – For Inorganic Chemistry, this book is more than self sufficient. This is the Bible for Inorganic Chemistry. As there are concepts in every chapter, but in inorganic chemistry there are many concepts and exceptions, so you will lastly have to remember the concepts by heart, so that you do not forget or confuse during JEE Mains or Advanced. It is the truth, you will have to learn many things, so it’s important to read only the things that are in the JEE syllabus. Most of the other books for Inorganic have much more content than required, so if you follow those you will end up learning many useless things. Its good to learn by practice in Inorganic. I would like to strongly recommend you this book, you must study and solve this!

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY :

Physical Chemistry by O.P. Tandon – Same as Organic Chemistry, O P Tandon for Physical is of the finest books. The author has covered all the topics in the best way so that you can understand and apply it to solve the problems. There are many types of problems at the end of each chapter which go level by level, helping to grasp each topic nicely. Physical Chemistry is also conceptual, so its important that you understand it nicely.

BEST BOOKS FOR JEE MATHEMATICS :

Maths By R.D. Sharma – This is one of the best book for JEE to make the basics clear for Mathematics. It contains theory for each chapter which is self explanatory and the there are many solved/unsolved problems which will build your foundation for entrance exams. I will not say that it is self sufficient for JEE Advanced though, because there aren’t as many tough problems as is  required for JEE Advanced preparation. So, for JEE Advanced at least, you have to consult other books or coaching institutions sheets.

Calculus By Amit Agarwal – For calculus this book is ideal. It contains problems which will start from the basic level and go upto the highest level. There are many techniques described to quickly solve the problems which is most important for Jee. You can do it after you have done R.D. Sharma.

Algebra by S.K.Goyal – This book is one of the good for JEE preparation. There are sufficient tough questions to practice. So, again you need to do R.D. Sharma first and then this book.

NCERT Text books of Mathematics- Mathematics is regarded as the hardest section to crack in JEE Main and make it a point that you do ample practice to be able to answer as many questions as possible.NCERT books for good scores in Mathematics. Again, it is compulsory to go through problems in NCERT Mathematics because there have been instances when a problem has directly been asked from there. You wouldn’t want to miss that chance.

So, these are the few books Matrix would recommend you. There will be many people who will suggest you many books, but its important for you to first choose which will be best for you and then start it, because most of the students start one book and then shift to another in the middle, and then another. This lastly creates a chaos and the student becomes puzzled. So, choose wisely.

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR TIME ?

Sometimes it happens that you have enough time to get things done, but something always comes up and then you fall behind in your study schedule. Perhaps, you find yourself unable to control your time. So what you can do to control how you spend it and better manage your time?

Time management is a choice; therefore make certain that you are spending your time effectively and go along with your study plans. Yes, it is not all that easy, but if you follow these simple tips you will be on your way to being the ultimate manager of your time.

Know how you’re spending your time ?

The key to managing your time well is to understand where your time actually goes. You can track your time for one week and then analyze the results. You can write down on a paper what you did every hour of each day for a week, so you could visualize it.

Plan ahead

On every weekend, take out some time to plan out your week ahead. Write down all what you want to accomplish in every study period. You can break up your study topics into manageable parts to increase your productivity and achieve your study goals. Also, try to study the most challenging topic first when your motivation is high.

Set goals and rewards for yourself

When you get up each morning, set goals for yourself as to what you plan to accomplish that day. Set mini rewards for yourself for that day achievements; say, you have finished revising a difficult chapter, treat yourself.

Avoid distracting study spots

You make sure to study in a distraction-free place and put your phone aside. Set aside specific times for checking your email and social media network- may be, right before or after lunch and at the end of the day. Refrain from checking your phone except during these allocated times. It will help you avoid social media breaks as you no longer can see your notifications- allowing you study effectively.

Use realistic self-talk

Write down your excuse for procrastinating and replace it with a realistic thought- this will force you to think stay up and spend the majority of your time on your studies. You have to decide to work hard for your education.

Keep in mind what’s motivating you

Ultimately, write down what is your biggest motivation. What you want to do? Why you want to do it? How will studying hard for your goals help your future aspirations? Use this to study more.

Failure doesn’t define you, success does

This is the time in the year when all the students are geared up for your exams be it JEE MAINS or your 12th BOARDS. This is also the time of the year when the pressure on the students is on its peak. And sad to say but this is also the part of year when most of the students face mental as well as nervous breakdown. This blog will mainly focus on the ill effects of the huge amount of pressure that the education system puts of the students.
Let me illustrate my point. Kota or “the city of coaching classes” as it is called leads in the number of suicides that the students commit. Every year around this time a lot of students take this extreme step and in all cases the reason is same….they could not perform to the expectations of society.
The point that I am trying to make is that these exams don’t define who you are. Qualifying these exams is not at all a parameter to success. Failing them will not guarantee that you are unsuccessful and clearing them does not mean that you are successful. I have numerous examples in which students who were not able to clear JEE reached the pinnacle of success and also those who failed even after getting admission in IIT.
Failures are just a stepping stones to success. I know how much it hurts to be in a situation in which you think that all the efforts that you have put in these years have been a total waste. But it is not the destination that matters but the journey itself. Success is something which never comes to anyone on their first go. You have to prove yourself that you are truly worthy for that success. Don’t think that you were not able to clear the exams, but rather think what did the life teach you in this entire journey and believe me there is no way a 3 hour paper can truly be a indicator of amount of hard work that you have done. Nobody is perfect in this world. Its ok to fail, everybody fails at some point of time but it is equally important to learn from the mistakes. There might be many reasons why you failed, maybe you were not able to manage time properly or just that you are not able to perform well under pressure.
Listen to me, if life would have been so easy then everyone would have been able to fulfill their dreams.
The wealthiest place on this planet is the graveyard because in a graveyard we will find inventions that were never really worked on, superb ideas that were never really worked on, hopes and aspirations that were never really acted upon. The question is what you are going to do with your time. What drives you? Success does not mean taking a giant step, rather it means taking lots of little steps in the right direction. You will never be successful until you turn your pain into efforts, until you allow your pain to push you from where you are to where you need to be. Just dace your pain, embrace it because it is going to be a part of your product, a part of your prize, a part of yourself.
See it’s time now. Now the decisions that you take will change your life forever. If you want to fulfill your dreams say yes to pain, say yes to suffering, yes to failures and say yes to your potential. When you die, leave no dream left behind guys. Leave no opportunity to accomplish your dreams and at last leave no regrets.
Best of luck
